Yes, color, patterns, wing span, and front leg length can all be used to identify butterflies.  Whatever characteristics that differ between species and can be seen can be used to identify butterflies. For instance, lets take a look at the following butterflies (that you saw the shapes of on the previous page) and try to recognize specific characteristics that will help us identify them.
