A Blast From the Past: Mapping One of the Largest Meteor Craters in the U.S.
For the past decade, Dr. Leif Tapanila and his students have climbed the desert mountains north of Las Vegas to uncover an ancient impact crater. Nearly 60 miles across, the Alamo crater is one of the largest impacts on U.S. soil. The impact occurred nearly 380 million years ago when Nevada was covered by shallow ocean, but the rocks are exposed today along the Extraterrestrial Highway – Nevada State Route 375.
