Overview:
Idaho has wildlife that is world famous. Idaho is home to more than 300 species of birds and 100 species of mammals. It's mountains, streams, deserts, and lakes are loaded with different life forms. This activity will help students learn more about Idaho's wildlife. This activity can be an excellent supplement to a unit on wildlife.

Procedure:
Encourage your students to use the Digital Atlas. Click on Idaho Overview, then on Wildlife. Read through the written material and click on the links to see the pictures of the animals. Students can work in small groups of 2-3 members or on an individual basis. Have your students answer the following questions. 1. Why did so many of the large mammal populations become so low in the earlier part of the nineteen hundreds? Have the species fully recovered?
2. Why is it important that we try to prevent species from going extinct?
3. What happened to the wolf population and why did this happen. Why are some people opposed to wolf reintroduction?
