Description of Project or Purpose of Assignment
To identify, label, and catalog (to include electronic
data entry) as well as appropriately store archaeological objects.
Outcomes/ Goals
Selected portions of Museum collections will be fully
processed for long term storage.
Training and Support Plan
Anthropology Collections Manager will train and supervise
all aspects of work.
Reporting
Written weekly report that explains any difficulties encountered,
and review of the current state of the cataloging process for assigned
materials.
Time Commitment
10 hours minimum. Must on a consistent schedule, but is
to be determined by consultation with Collections Manager. Duration
is whatever volunteer is able to give.
Qualifications Needed
Steady hand and ability to cope well with tedious and
repetitive tasks. Some knowledge of stone tool classification would
be helpful.
Benefits
The volunteer will learn about archaeological tool classification
and museum practices. Cataloging artifacts is an important part
of making these objects accessible for use in exhibits and education,
so it is very important to what we do. The volunteer will receive
a volunteer parking pass to be used on service days, recognition
during National Volunteer Appreciation Week and will gain personal
satisfaction by partnering with the Museum and its staff. After
volunteering 30 service hours each year, the volunteer will receive
an individual Museum membership. If requested and warranted, letters
of recommendation and documentation of service will be provided
to the volunteer.
