The
Unique Planet
Water
exists in different forms in the universe. Water can be found on
Earth, the Moon, Mars, and Jupiters's moon Europa, and in interstellar
clouds. Water, in the form of ice, is also thought to form the cores
of comets.
Earth is not unique in the
solar system because it has water. However, of all the nine planets,
our Earth is the only planet where water is one of the most valuable
resources. Without water life on Earth would not exist, plants would
not grow, and animals would have no food,
Water
is found everywhere on Earth, including the deserts, and covers
three-quarters of the planet. Water is found in rocks, in the atmosphere,
and beneath the ground. A major component of volcanic eruptions
is water, and the human body is composed of approximately 75% water.
The
total amount of water on Earth, combining the oceans, seas, lakes,
and rivers, remains the same. We have the same water now as there
was billions of years ago when the newly formed Earth finally cooled
enough to allow rain to fall.
